UPPER DELAWARE RIVER VALLEY — As dangerous levels of heat hit the region, areas in Sullivan, Wayne and Pike Counties are providing emergency cooling for those in need.
This list will be updated as more information becomes available.
The Sullivan County Government Center put out a list of places to keep cool this season, encouraging county residents to take extra precautions when outside and to not hesitate to call 911 if needed.
The list comprises:
Cooling stations are being provided in co-ordination with the Nobody Wayne mutual aid group. The Wayne County Democrats Headquarters, 967 Main Street, will be open as a cooling center Tuesday, July 2 and Friday, July 3 from 11 a.m to 5 p.m. as a cooling location. The Honesdale Public Library will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, July 2 and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, July 3 as a cooling location.
There will be coolers with water outside both locations, which Nobody Wayne will try and keep filled with cold water throughout the week. For updated information, watch the Nobody Wayne Instagram page at https://www.instagram.com/nobodywaynecan.
The Lakeville Volunteer Fire Department, located at 10 Daniels Road, Lakeville, will be open as a cooling station Thursday, July 2 from 12 to 6 p.m. For more information, see the Lakeville Volunteer Fire Department Facebook page.
The Pike County Main Library at 119 E. Harford St., Milford, plans to be open Friday, July 3 from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. as a cooling location. The library is open Thursday as well, but will be closed for the 4th of July holiday.
Select Pike County Senior Centers will be acting as cooling centers. The Blooming Grove Senior Center at 150 Pike County Blvd, Lords Valley will be open Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the exception of Friday, July 3. The Eastern Pike Senior Center at the Matamoras Fire House, 506 Avenue Q, Matamoras will be open Wednesday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. For additional information, contact the Pike County Area Agency on Aging at 570/775-5550.
