September is here, bringing cooler mornings, changing leaves and that familiar feeling that fall is just around the corner. The days might be getting a little shorter, but there’s still plenty of time to get outside, enjoy our beautiful area, and take in everything the season has to offer.

Here are some events happening in our community and beyond:

The Cochecton Preservation Society will celebrate its 20th annual Coffee, Tea and History program on Sunday, September 20 at 1 p.m. at the historic Cochecton Train Station, 8537 Rte. 97 in Cochecton, NY. The event will be held rain or shine and is free and open to the public, with refreshments available.

This year’s program will feature docent Glenn Pontier, who will present “Wood, Coal and Water: Three Essentials that Changed the River Valley.” The presentation will explore the important role these natural resources played in shaping the history and development of the Upper Delaware River Valley.

Following the program, the society will hold its Wood Raffle. The winner will receive a full cord of kiln-dried firewood, delivered within 25 miles, or can choose a $100 cash prize. Raffle tickets cost $10 each or three for $20. For more information, call 845/932-8104 or email cps12726@gmail.com. The program is sponsored by the Upper Delaware Scenic Byway.

Save the date for a fun community event this fall—The Lake Huntington Presbyterian Church Ladies Aid will sponsor a penny social on Saturday, October 17. Mark your calendars and plan to join them for a great time with friends and neighbors. More details will be shared as the event gets closer.

There’s plenty of live music coming to the area at the Arts Nest in Lake Huntington, NY this October: On Saturday, October 3, Shanna in a Dress takes the stage from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Known for her clever humor, candid songwriting and playful stage presence, Shanna blends heartfelt lyrics with guitar, piano and ukulele.

On Saturday, October 10, Martin Gilmore performs from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Gilmore brings an easy-going folk style, soulful vocals and impressive guitar work to a mix of traditional favorites and original songs.

Then on Sunday, October 11, Kazzrie Jaxen and Eric Baylin perform from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., combining improvisational piano, spoken word poetry, storytelling and plenty of unexpected creative flourishes.

Rounding out the month on Thursday, October 22, Charming Disaster performs from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. The Brooklyn-based goth-folk duo mixes dark humor, folklore, magic and the macabre with vocal harmonies, ukulele, guitar and theatrical flair. Tickets for each performance cost $20 in advance from My River Tickets or $25 at the door; visit www.delawarevalleyopera.org/index.php/arts-nest.
