4-H Robotics Team tackles overfishing crisis

MIDDLETOWN, NY — The Building Legends 4-H First Lego League Robotics team has set its sights on a global issue with local impact: overfishing. Combining the team’s passion for robotics and teamwork with a commitment to environmental stewardship, an innovative solution aimed at tackling this pressing problem has been developed.

The team chose overfishing as their project topic for the first Lego League competition, recognizing the urgent need to preserve marine ecosystems. After researching the topic, the team identified a crucial gap in addressing overfishing: that many young people are unaware of how their food choices impact ocean health.

The team’s solution was a dynamic, peer-focused awareness campaign designed to educate fellow students and community members about the importance of choosing responsible seafood. Through engaging presentations, interactive activities and resources, the team aimed to empower their peers to make informed decisions that support sustainable fishing practices.

“We wanted to focus on something that would make a real difference,” said Joy, one of the team members. “By helping others understand the impact of overfishing and how they can help, we can make the oceans healthier and a better future for everyone.”

The project has been an incredible learning experience for the team, blending STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) principles with real-world problem solving. It aligns perfectly with the values of 4-H, which encourages youth to engage in hands-on learning and leadership opportunities.

Building Legends presented the project at the competition in January.
