Three people were arrested by Sullivan County Sheriff’s Detectives, last week for allegedly preying on an elderly resident of Livingston Manor. Phillip Edwards, 25, of Livingston Manor was charged with felony possession of stolen property, burglary and petit larceny June 3, 2011. Allegedly Edwards went to the residence of an 88 year old Livingston Manor woman on June 2, 2011. He told the woman she owed him $150 for work he had done, he demanded payment. Edwards never did work. Edwards convinced the victim to give him a $400 loan so he could purchase parts to fix his truck. The loan was said to be paid back June 1st. The victim was intimidated and gave Edwards $550. An alert teller at the First National Bank of Jeffersonville in Livingston Manor refused to accept the check when Edwards attempted to cash it because the teller knew the victim. Detectives recovered silver coins that belonged to the victim’s son that were stolen from the residence when they arrested Edwards. Once arrested, Edwards asked to make a telephone call to his mother to arrange bail. Instead, Edwards instructed his two sisters to go to the victims home and have her sign a statement that said he didn’t do anything wrong. Deputies charged Catherine Edwards, 31 and Leslie Edwards, 28, with tampering with a witness. Phillips Edwards was sent to the Sullivan County Jail in lieu of $20,000 dollars bail following arraignment by Town of Rockland Judge Frank Gibson. The sisters are to return in the Town of Rockland court on June 21, 2011. The investigation is continuing to determine if there were other senior citizens victimized.
