Smoke testing of the sanitary sewer system

NARROWSBURG, NY — Get ready for an unusual sight. 

On Tuesday and Wednesday, July 11 and 12—weather permitting—the Narrowsburg Sewer Department will be conducting a survey of the sanitary sewer system. Workers will open manholes and cleanouts to blow non-toxic smoke through the lines to locate breaks and defects in the system. 

So don’t be surprised if you see smoke rising from the ground or even from the building’s vent stacks. 

Don’t worry, it’s non-toxic, harmless and creates no fire hazard.

Homeowners should be on the lookout for any smoke that enters their home. That’s a clear indication of defective plumbing, a faulty or illegal connection to the sewer system, or that drains have dried up.  

This smoke is harmless, leaves no stains and has no ill effects on pets, plants or people. But if it does enter your home during the test, it is a clear sign that dangerous sewer gases have also been entering your home. Sewer gases can have no odor, and can have long-term adverse health effects. So, this smoke test offers homeowners a valuable warning.
