On April 23, the 139th District (Pike and Wayne counties) will face a special election to fill former Rep. Joe Adams’ vacated seat.  The League of Women Voters Forum for State House candidates in the 139th District, scheduled for March 19, was canceled because Republican Jeff Olsommer refused to participate.

As Democratic candidate Robin Skibber noted, “The bare minimum that candidates seeking office should do is meet with and hear from the voters that they are trying to represent. Olsommer’s decision to not participate in a public forum sends a clear message—he’s not interested in what you and your family need; he’s not interested in improving your life and the state of our district; and ultimately, he’s not interested in your vote.”

Unlike Olsommer, Skibber has been meeting voters of all political persuasions at their door, in meet-and-greets open to the public, and she was eager to participate in this forum.  So ask yourself: what kind of representative does the district need? Someone who expects you to vote for him without doing the work, or someone who has a career in service that is fundamentally based on listening, learning and acting on the needs of our communities? The answer is clear.
