ORANGE COUNTY, NY — Garnet Health announced that Anjana Poonthota, M.D., MPH, the hospitalist at Garnet Health Doctors Pediatric, has been appointed by the Orange County legislature to the Board of Health of Orange County.

Dr. Poonthota serves as Garnet Health’s chair of the pediatrics department; the medical director of Women and Children’s Services; and more at Garnet Health.

The board of health considers matters relating to the preservation and improvement of public health within Orange County and can make recommendations to the commissioner of the health department.

“We... look forward to working with Dr. Poonthota and are eager to learn from her broad expertise and years of experience serving the Orange County community,” said Orange County Department of Health Commissioner Alicia Pointer.

New York State public health law requires boards of health to have seven members; at least three members must be physicians licensed to practice medicine in New York. The members of the Orange County Board of Health must be residents of Orange County.

Dr. Poonthota received her medical degree from Guntur Medical College, NTR University of Health Services in India, and completed her pediatrics residency at Albany Medical Center in Albany. She holds a master’s degree in public health from the School of Public Health, SUNY Albany, as well as in business administration from University of Massachusetts Amherst.
