WALTON, NY — United Health Services (UHS) Delaware Valley Hospital has received provisional approval from the New York State Department of Health to operate its new MRI. 

The new unit is temporarily located in the rear of the hospital building, where the mobile MRI unit was located.

The hospital is in the process of constructing a small addition to the hospital itself which will serve as a waiting and changing area for patients. Once that is completed, the MRI will be relocated to its permanent position and will be accessed through the imaging department of the hospital.

“About one in 12 people in Delaware County lacks access to a vehicle,” said Randy Taylor, manager of Imaging and Cardiopulmonary at UHS Delaware Valley. “This, coupled with few public transportation options, poses a responsibility for us to provide as many high-quality service options as we can, so patients don’t need to travel long distances to seek care.”

MRI, which stands for magnetic resonance imaging, uses a magnetic field and radio waves to create images. It is used to better see soft tissues and organs. 

Patients who are seeking an MRI will be asked questions to ensure they can safely have the test. They will be asked not to wear any clothing or jewelry that has a metal component. 

All patients are “wanded” (screened for metal) prior to entering the magnet area, to ensure their safety.
