Fermenting thoughts

CALLICOON, NY — Have you always wanted to know more about fermentation? On Sunday, September 24 at the Callicoon Farmers Market, you can visit the Farm Arts Collective tent to get a hands-on fermentation lesson with Tannis Kowalchuk and Jess Beveridge.

Bring a mason jar, and while you’re at the market, buy fermentable vegetables such as daikon, cabbage, beets, turnips and carrots from your favorite farmers.

“We will help get it sauer for you!” Kowalchuk said.

You'll learn the best tips for a successful ferment.

Knives, cutting boards, sea salt and water will be available for your use.

They will have some extra jars but ask you to bring your own vessel if possible. As said, mason jars are ideal.

This is a drop-by workshop, so no up-front fee or registration is required. But as always, donations are welcome. The collective is fundraising to take “Dream on the Farm” to a theatre festival in New York City in October.
