HAWLEY, PA — The Wayne County Historical Society (WCHS) will host the 10th annual Canal Festival on Saturday, August 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Delaware and Hudson Canal Park at Lock 31.

This free rain-or-shine event will feature live traditional music by the Poison Love acoustic band from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the Ann Loeb/Mike Baglione acoustic band from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Visitors will find blacksmithing by Gravity Forge, wood carving by the Cherry Ridge Wood Carvers and Tom Hollister, early trapping and outdoor skills by Ed Burgholzer, and guided history and nature walks by Sally Talaga and John Harvey.

There will be fiber-arts displays and demonstrations, and the Stourbridge Lion “cub” will make an appearance.

Local historical societies, conservancies and the National Park Service will be there.

Pike-Wayne Trout Unlimited will provide fly fishing demonstration and lessons at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m.

The Pennsylvania Society of Archeology will continue its “dig” in the canal.

The Wayne County Conservation District will be present, Wayne County master gardeners will have a booth, and the 143rd New York Volunteer Infantry Civil War reenactors will be present.

The Living History Stage will host the popular folk musician Dave Matskino at 10:30 a.m. and 12:45 p.m., and Frank Littlebear and the Red Vision Native American Dance Team will perform at 11:30 a.m. and 1:45 p.m.

Additional children’s activities including an educational scavenger hunt will be offered.

Food will be available for purchase, local authors will sign and sell their books, and local history items will be available to buy inside the Canal Store.

All are invited to bring a blanket or lawn chair and spend the day—or part of it—enjoying the 17-acre park and historic site along the Lackawaxen River.

This event is made possible by a grant from the Wayne County Commissioners; the Wayne County Hotel Tax Committee; sponsorships from local businesses and friends; in-kind donations from Hunt Signs, Spencer Printing and Alan Kehoe; and equipment loans from the National Park Service and the canal park’s many volunteers.

The canal park is located on Route 6, one mile west of the Settlers Inn.
