A sparkling prelude to summer

May is like a burst of confetti in the calendar, marking the start of blooming flowers, warmer days and outdoor adventures. Mother’s Day and Memorial Day weekend are also on the horizon and it feels as though it is the unofficial start to the summer.

Have a look at a few events and activities in our community and locally: 

2024 Town of Cochecton clean-up weekend

Town of Cochecton residents: On May 18 and 19 from 9 a.m. to 2:45 p.m., items can be brought to the Old Town Hall, 116 County Rte. 116, Lake Huntington, NY.

Acceptable items include household junk and bulky waste (furniture, mattresses, carpets, etc.). Iron pipes must be cut to four-foot lengths. Drums and tanks must be empty and cut open or crushed. Paint or tar cans must be empty and dry.

NO full or partially full cans of paint, NO commercial dumping.  NO household garbage, NO yard waste, leaves, stumps, roots, or rocks. NO HAZARDOUS WASTES. No petroleum products, pesticides or propane tanks.  NO computers/monitors, television sets (all display types).  NO fluorescent bulbs/lamps.  

The Town of Cochecton will be accepting four regular car and truck tires at no cost; the cost will be $3 per tire after the fourth tire. No oversized tires are allowed.

This program is made possible by the Sullivan County Legislature along with the Division of Public Works and Solid Waste and the Town of Cochecton.

A Wellness and Psychic Fair will take place on Saturday, May 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at JURNI Quantum Healing Center, located at 420 Bernas Rd., Cochecton, NY. Join others for a day of mystical magic, healing and wellness. 

This is a free event and the first 30 moms to arrive will receive a gift. Some offerings include hand-crafted delights, tarot readings, pet communication, psychic mediums, holistic practitioners, chair yoga, reiki, bone casting, reflexology and more. Tour the NEW woman-owned and operated healing center in Sullivan County.

Firehouse Antiques will open for the season on Saturday, May 11 at 10 a.m. It’s located at the corner of Route 17B and Mueller Road in the Town of Cochecton. The shop will be open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. through the end of June. Additional hours will be announced. Find it online at www.thefirehouseantiques.com.

Sullivan West pre-K and kindergarten registration dates announced. Registration and screening for pre-K will be held at the SW Elementary campus in Jeffersonville on May 8 and May 15. Your child must turn four on or before December 1. Registration and screening for kindergarten will be held at the SW Elementary campus in Jeffersonville on May 22. Your child must turn five on or before December 1. Online registration is available on the District website at www.swcsd.org.
