ROSCOE, NY — The Castskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum (CFFCM) has acquired the Dave Chermanski Rod Casting Simulator. The one-of-a-kind machine was one of the best-kept secrets in the fishing tackle industry for nearly 35 years.

Fewer than 30 people, prior to 2011, had ever seen or heard of the Chermanski Casting Simulator (CCS), despite the fact it had provided important data concerning graphite and fiberglass fishing rods that has benefited the entire fishing industry since 1977.

Chermanski selected the Catskill Fly Fishing Museum as the repository for his device just three weeks prior to his death on March 17. The CCS machine now resides in the center of the Catskill Fly Fishing Museum.

Based on many testing projects and test results, the CCS provided numerous important and revealing insights on some major fishing topics. Treatises on casting mechanics, fly-rod performance, fishing reel drags systems, fishing rod dynamics, fish fighting techniques and fly line characteristics have been based on data produced by this machine.

Chermanski’s manuscripts are highly technical and will require extensive study before the machine is put back into use. The CCS will remain in the center of the museum until it finds its permanent home in the planned Catskill Rodmakers Workshop this fall.
