Donald G. Nelson Sr. of Hasbrouck, NY, a retired correctional officer for the State of New York and a lifelong resident of the area, crossed over on Friday, January14, 2011, in Liberty, NY. He was 63.

The son of the late Donald Peter and Ellen Lois Levers Nelson, he was born April 21, 1947 in Cochecton, NY.

A Vietnam veteran, Donald was a sergeant in the U.S. Army and had received many medals during the war. He was a member of Disabled Veterans Assn., VFW Post #5808, Callicoon,NY, and the American Legion.

He is survived by his children Nicole Nelson of Parksville, NY, Brittany Nelson of Liberty, Donald Nelson Jr. of Liberty, Melonie Cruz and husband, Miguel of Monticello, NY and Marie Leeper of Middletown, NY brothers William McKinley Nelson and wife Annie of Willow, AK and Frederick Joseph Nelson and wife Linda of Cochecton; nine grandchildren; companion Brenda Nelson of Liberty; friend Craig Dobbs; aunt Katherine N. Pierce; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Narrowsburg, NY VFW Post #5808 conducted military services at 8 p.m. on January 17 at Rasmussen Funeral Home, Narrowsburg. A graveside service was held on Tuesday, January 18, at Sullivan Co. Veteran Cemetery, Liberty.
