MILANVILLE, PA — After being closed for repairs for nearly a year, the bridge at Skinners Falls over the Upper Delaware River is once again open to the public. Its closure had negatively impacted the Milanville General Store, the only business in the tiny hamlet.
The Skinners Falls Bridge opened in 1902 and is on the National Register of Historic Places. Its recent closure came only a few years after a closure for repairs that occurred from 2012 to 2013. This time, PennDOT said the bridge might have been closed indefinitely, which sparked a community outcry.
PennDot spokemsman James May said the main problem with the bridge is that it is 114 years old, and was built to handle horses and buggies, or early cars, and not the heavy vehicles that cross it nowadays.
