CANAAN TOWNSHIP, PA — The Wayne County Coroner Edward Howell released his report Thursday morning on the death of 21-year-old Derek DeGroat. The report officially rules the death a homicide, and also uses the term “suicide by cop.”

DeGroat was shot and killed by police outside a home near Waymart on December 21. On that night, police responded to a 911 call saying DeGroat was suicidal. The coroner report states he had possession of lethal weapons. The primary cause of death is “multiple gunshot wounds” but does not say how many police fired.

Family members and others demonstrated earlier this week in front of the county courthouse saying that police used excessive deadly force. They called for “Derek’s Law” that would require a suicide-prevention counselor be dispatched with law enforcement on a mental health call.
