TOWN OF BETHEL, NY — A 33-year-old Narrowsburg man was killed in a collision on the evening of August 2, when he was involved in a head-on collision on State Route 17B in the Town of Bethel.

The Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office says Robert Schenk was driving a Toyota Camry that crossed over into the oncoming lane of traffic at about 8:40 p.m.

An autopsy performed the next day determined that Schenk died from traumatic injuries caused by the impact. He was not wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash, although the airbag was deployed.

Schenk’s vehicle struck a Ford passenger van that was carrying eight occupants. The van, which was returning from a shopping trip to Woodbury Commons in Orange County, was heading to Camp Lavi in Lakewood, PA near Honesdale. All of the occupants, who ranged in age from 19 to 28 years old, were injured.

Five of the victims were taken to Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris, two were transported to Ellenville Hospital and one refused medical aid.

Firefighters from White Lake and Kauneonga Lake responded to the scene as well as EMS personnel from Mobile Medic, Bethel Ambulance, and Hatzola.

Deputies were assisted at the scene by state troopers and Town of Bethel constables.

Sheriff’s deputies are still investigating the accident and have not determined why Schenk’s vehicle left its lane of travel.
