SHANDAKAN, NY — Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo announced on May 20 that New York State has acquired 590 acres of land on the upper slopes of Balsam Mountain in the Catskill Park, which will help to preserve critical habitats and expand outdoor recreation opportunities for visitors. According to the governor’s office, this effort supports the goals of the governor’s 2014 Tourism Summit as well as the state’s weeklong celebration of the beginning of the summer travel season, which features various outdoor recreational opportunities.

“By purchasing nearly 600 acres around Balsam Mountain, the state is expanding the Catskill Forest and helping ensure this natural jewel will be preserved and accessible for generations to come,” Gov. Cuomo said. “The addition of these lands builds on the state’s efforts to protect valuable natural resources and habitats, while also opening up new opportunities for New Yorkers and our visitors to experience the great outdoor areas and recreational assets available here in the Empire State.”

The Balsam Mountain property is located in the Town of Shandaken, Ulster County.
