Walk to combat juvenile arthritis

Those who will take part in the 2013 Hudson Valley Arthritis Walk will be walking in part for two local children, Jailyn and Sami, Eldred Central School students who were identified only by their first names. Both of these young girls have been waging a war against juvenile arthritis from an early age. Juvenile arthritis is a disease of the immune system, which causes this normal defense system to attack its own cells and tissues. There are 300,000 children in the U.S. who suffer from the debilitating disease.

The walk, and a local pancake breakfast, received the endorsement of all those at the regular meeting of the Highland Town Board on April 9, with Supervisor Andrew Boyar urging any and all residents to support this worthy cause.

The pancake breakfast is set for 11 a.m. on April 29 at the Lumberland Town Hall. Those who wish to walk with Jailyn and Sami and raise money for this cause can do so on May 4 at the Thomas Bull Memorial Park, Montgomery at 10 a.m.

In other business, Cherish Galvin-Bliefernich, an Eldred Central School District remedial math teacher, made an announcement that the Eldred Faculty Association and Neighbors’ Helping Hand (NHH) are inviting community organizations and school clubs to participate in sponsoring a booth or activity at Eldred Pride Day, Saturday, May 18 at the Eldred Junior/Senior High School from 10 a.m. through 3 p.m.

She urged residents to join the NHH fundraising walk from the Yulan ball fields to the Eldred school, scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 10:45 a.m. A carnival is planned from 11 a.m. through 1 p.m. Booths will be run by local clubs and organizations with a variety of activities and host of food.

From 1 to 2:30 p.m., the Over 30 Alumni Basketball Game will be played, where alumni of Eldred Central School District are invited to play for their alma mater. The Key Elements will perform the National Anthem.

The closing ceremony will feature a photo montage of images of the community and various groups within it.
