Ira Cohen, the Sullivan County treasurer and former county attorney, has died. Cohen had been battling pancreatic cancer for several years, but had been working at the government center in recent weeks.
Prior to the battle with cancer, in 2008 Cohen had a kidney transplant, with the kidney being donated by Nancy Buck the county's deputy treasurer.
Cohen had a long record of public service and was active in many causes. He played a role in challenging the voters who registered in the Town of Bethel, listing bungalows as their local residences.
In 2013 he ran to serve for another four years as treasurer and was unopposed. Cohen was 69 years old.
