MILFORD, PA — Pike County Sheriff Phil Beuki announced that there would be a prescription drug take-back day on Saturday, April 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the sheriff’s building. No questions will be asked, according to Beuki. No illegal drugs will be accepted.

“Prescription drugs are now considered the most serious opportunity for drug abuse young people face today,” he said. “People across the country and the county are being asked to clean out their medicine cabinets.”

Such drugs as oxycotin, oxycodone and valium are readily available in family medicine cabinets, he said.

“On the street, oxycodone sells for $40 a pill,” he said. Exycotin and oxycodone are analgesic medications that are commonly prescribed to relieve pain, he said. Both require a doctor’s prescription.

“Last year, there was a huge snow storm and still we collected 58 pounds of these drugs,” Beuki said.

“Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse,” he said.

Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—both pose potential safety and health hazards.
