NARROWSBURG, NY — Saturday, October 13 is Music Day and the highlight this year is a performance of “Green Sneakers,” written for string quartet and baritone. Composer Ricky Ian Gordon of Wurtsboro and New York City will attend the concert, which begins at 5 p.m. at the Tusten Theatre in Narrowsburg. The Voxare String Quartet performs along with baritone Jesse Blumberg.

Music Day is sponsored by the Delaware Valley Chamber Orchestra in partnership with the Tusten Historical Society and local businesses with additional support from a Sullivan County Arts and Heritage Grant.

“Green Sneakers” is an elegy for Gordon’s partner, who died from complications of AIDS. Opera Today called the piece “a masterpiece… a farewell lamentation that transcends death.”

Tickets, which are available at the door or by calling the box office, cost $20 and are free for those under age 21. Call 845/ 252-7272.

Other Music Day events include a free rhythm-and-blues concert on the deck on Main Street at 2 p.m., a walking tour of the village by the Tusten Historical Society at 3:15 p.m. (meet at the Mews on Main Street) and a cocktail reception for composer Gordon at 6:30 p.m. at the River Gallery: Art of Living. The day ends with live jazz at Gerard’s River Grill.
