I used to think that by the time I reached retirement age, I’d be ready for some serious downtime. I thought that eventually all grandparents moved to Florida and played shuffleboard. But after spending an afternoon with the fine folks of the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) of Sullivan County, I’m inclined to rethink my priorities.
HONESDALE, PA — The Wayne County Farmers Market (WCFM) just introduced a program that will enhance the buying power of seniors shopping for fresh, local food with their vendors. If a senior spends the Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) vouchers at the WCFM, it will give them its own certificate worth an equivalent amount.
SULLIVAN COUNTY, NY — Select farmers’ markets in the Catskills accept Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Checks, as well as SNAP/EBT and WIC benefits. Seniors 60 and over who meet income requirements are eligible to receive $20 in checks to spend at the participating farmers’ markets.
REGION — Both New York State and Pennsylvania have Senior Farmers’ Market Nutrition Programs (SFMNP) that provide free vouchers to lower-income seniors that they can use to purchase fresh fruits and vegetables from local farmers and farmers’ markets that have been approved to participate.
SHOHOLA, PA — The seniors from Twin Cedars recently traveled to Red Lobster Restaurant in Middletown, NY for lunch. The van was packed to capacity, and all were excited to head out of town for the day to enjoy their favorite seafood meal with friends.
The risk of stroke increases as you get older: It nearly doubles every decade after you reach 55 years of age. But that does not mean that the rest of the population isn’t at some risk as well; even children can get strokes.
