JEFFERSONVILLE, NY — If you wanted to see a small family-farm operation up close and personal, the Hilly Acres Farm Fest was just the ticket. The annual one-day open house at the Hahn family farm offered farm visitors a glimpse of how pigs are raised, how chicks are incubated and the importance of 4-H and the Cornell Cooperative Extension to the farming community.

Begun as a way to thank Hilly Acres’ customers and allow them to see how the animals are raised, the event has grown into a community-wide opportunity to spend an afternoon, outside, on a farm. There was pumpkin decorating, hay rides, live music, food, craft vendors, an antique tractor display and a spinning demonstration.

Amidst all the fun, there was an opportunity to talk with the farmers—Andy, Tanya and their son Mike—about how a small family farm runs, to see that pasture-raised meat can be produced in a sustainable way and to experience the breadth of information, knowledge and commitment that local farmers have to producing our food.
