When democracy fails

Democracy requires trust.

Unlike other models of government, a democracy (especially a democratic republic) needs people to trust institutions and believe in the rule of law.

Here are some facts that are not in dispute.

01/06/2020:

15 police officers hospitalized;

Over 100 injured;

$2.7 million in physical damages to the building;

2:44 p.m. One civilian shot while attempting to climb through a broken window of the last barricaded door protecting congressmen;

4:17 p.m. Trump  released video, telling his supporters “to go home now”;

5:34 p.m. Capitol building secured;

6:01 p.m. Trump: “These are the things and events that happen when a sacred landslide election victory is so unceremoniously & viciously stripped away from great patriots who have been badly & unfairly treated for so long”;

“Remember this day forever!”

I for one will remember that day forever. As an embarrassment and a disgrace, and with utter disgust that my fellow citizens were duped into thinking an election had been stolen from them.

Our system of government can only survive with our consent. When we stop believing in our elections and our courts, democracy fails.

VOTE.
