What is Memorial Day?

Posted

Hope you all enjoyed your three-day weekend. What is Memorial Day? When I was a child it was the end of the school year and time to go to our rented house in Long Beach for the summer.

When I was older and out in the work field it was a three-day weekend, I always planned a vacation. When I met my husband who was a Vietnam Vet, he told me there is nothing happy about Memorial Day.

Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States of America. Memorial Day is to honor the men and woman who died while serving in the US Military.

Back in 1868 General John Logan from the Civil War issued a proclamation calling for Decoration Day to put flags, wreaths, and flowers on the graves.

Memorial Day is the last Monday of May. Memorial Day did not become a federal holiday till 1971, by President Richard Nixon. I know this is coming out after Memorial Day, but I was on the internet looking up the meaning of Memorial Day and thought I should share with my readers.

Let's see what restaurants are open. Fosterdale Country Café opened on May 20 (take- out only). Annie's Ruff Cut is going strong with their take-out and car hop service. Cochecton Fire Station restaurant is doing food and drinks to go. Henning's website is posting their patio pick up. Lakeview Pizza and Bar opened on May 21 hours 11-8 take-out only. Within the next few weeks will have a roadside eatery. Dave's Backyard Skewer will be located Rt. 97 and County Rt. 116.

The Litter Pluck started on May 18 and goes to June 30. Clean up day will be sometime in August. You can always check out the town's website for more information, and when bags and stickers will be available.

AYSO Western Sullivan Region 647 is feeling fantastic. Happy Soccer Sunday AYSO Family! Good news to share. Registration is now open. Due to Covid-19, registration and payments are online. NO forms to print for this year. Uniform will be available in August. Visit ayso647.org to register today.

Be safe and wash your hands and wear your mask.

Keep smiling and have a great week and you can e-mail me at leeniebeans@citlink.net or call (845) 252-3568 if you have any news.
