HONESDALE, PA — This week’s installment of The Hustings, a photo essay chronicling the people and imagery of the 2024 presidential election at the grassroots level, takes another look at the Democratic Party in one county in the battleground state of Pennsylvania.
From its headquarters on Main Street in Honesdale, local Democrats rally every day to get out the vote and communicate their message in a county that is predominantly Republican. It is the base camp for the outreach to all the voters in a place where Trump signs are on display year-round even when there isn’t an election.
On September 7, the official opening of the headquarters was celebrated modestly but energetically and joyfully with pizza and brief speeches. Those included inspiring words by Virginia Doherty McGregor, treasurer of the Democratic National Committee and national co-chair of its Women’s Leadership Forum. McGregor is a NEPA native who makes her home on the same street where President Biden grew up.
The right of anyone living in a democratic republic is to feel free to express political views without fear of reprisal.
Regrettably reports of anonymous vandalism and other forms of hostility toward people husting for both parties is evidence of the schism between the ideals of the nation and the grim nature of partisan politics.
