Wayne to impose a $5 fee on vehicle registrations

WAYNE COUNTY, PA — The Wayne County Commissioners prepared an ordinance at their June 17 meeting to impose a $5 annual county use fee on every non-exempt vehicle registered to a Wayne County address.

The revenue collected by the fee will offset the costs of repairs to 36 county-owned bridges, alleviating the need for tax increases to pay for those repairs, according to the ordinance.

The 2024 PA Report of Registrations lists 61,041 total vehicles registered in Wayne County. While this figure does not account for the number of exempt vehicles in Wayne County, it allows for an estimation of approximately $300,000 to be collected in local use fees.

The types of vehicles exempt from registration fees under PA statutes include government vehicles, vehicles owned by volunteer emergency services and vehicles owned by certain types of Veterans, including those who have been captured by the enemy in any armed conflict for which the Department of Defense authorizes a campaign medal.

Counties across Pennsylvania gained the option to implement this fee in 2015. Since then, 24 counties have done so, including Pike County in 2018.

The fee will be imposed together with regular vehicle registration fees, at a rate of $5 per year. So, a two-year registration will include a $10 local use fee, and a five-year registration will include a $25 local use fee.
