Grant gets students moving at Monticello elementary schools

MONTICELLO, NY — It’s a new year, and a lot of people are embracing new health goals. It’s particularly critical for schools, where staff and students have been badly impacted by the pandemic.

At the Cooke and Rutherford schools in Monticello, the goal of good health just got a little easier to reach.

The two elementary schools were awarded grants from Sullivan 180 for projects focused on improving the health and well-being of students and staff. The planned projects include increasing movement indoors and outdoors, mindfulness curricula, activity sets and more.

At the George Cooke school, the $3,000 grant they received will be used by the Healthier Generations club, which will buy outerwear for students who do not have it. Not only do coats, mittens and gloves keep the kids warm, but they allow the child to play outside.

The club also plans to purchase playground supplies and a shed to store them in, according to club advisor Elisa Mendels.

Nine staff members will create wellness initiatives, such as mindfulness work, for staff and students.

At Rutherford School, a $3,000 grant from Sullivan 180 will be used for their “Our Backyard” project, suggested by fifth grade teacher Kayleigh Bowles, which will get kids moving as part of the learning process. The funds from the grant will be used to purchase activity sets, hula hoops, jump ropes, yoga mats and more. Some items will enhance the garden structure at the school so that students can use the space for outdoor learning.

The projects were made possible with support from Sullivan Renaissance and Sullivan 180, with funding from the Rowley Foundation.
