HONESDALE, PA — The Wayne County Commissioners proclaimed September 21 in recognition of world-wide observance of Usher Syndrome Awareness Day.

Usher Syndrome is a rare genetic disorder that may cause the onset of balance problems, deafness and or blindness at birth or progressively during adolescent years.

Lisa Lopatofsky, of Waymart, has three daughters, Michaela, 5, Alexandra, 3 and Aurora, 16-months. All three carry the genetic abnormality. While Michaela and Alexandra have developed the syndrome’s hearing loss, Lisa said they are doing well otherwise. Aurora is a carrier, but testing indicates that she will not develop the syndrome.
