Trout in the Classroom gets NY ‘Best of Fair’ award

SYRACUSE, NY— This year’s recipient of the Best of Fair blue-ribbon award at the Great New York State Fair was Sullivan County’s 4-H Trout in the Classroom project.

Every year, Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County (CCESC)’s 4-H Youth Development program displays a selection of outstanding youth-project work exhibits at the fair. Of the 39 entries showcased at the fair, four Sullivan County exhibits secured a number of “Outstanding Recognition” awards, and one was selected for the “Best of Fair” blue-ribbon award, the fair’s highest honor.

The Trout in the Classroom project creates a journal, tracking observations and testing results, featuring diagrams and artwork following the development of fish fry from eggs to release in local waterways. The award shines a light on the experiential learning opportunities made possible by Sullivan County 4-H youth members and their adult mentors. To learn more about this project, visit www.givegab.com/campaigns/trout-in-the-classroom.

The selection of New York State Fair exhibits takes place during the annual Sullivan County Youth Fair on the third weekend in August at the Grahamsville Fairgrounds. It is open to all youth who wish to engage in face-to-face evaluations of project work. Exemplary exhibits are recognized and nominated to represent Sullivan County at the New York State Fair.

Any Sullivan County youth ages 5-18 can apply to enroll in 4-H for free, all year long.  To learn more about 4-H, call CCESC at 845/292-6180 or visit sullivanc ce.org/4-h-youth-development.
