NARROWSBURG, NY — On Saturday, May 6 at 8 pm, the DVAA’s Tusten Theatre Spring Cultural Series continues with award-winning cabaret singer Marissa Mulder performing “Tom… In His Words,” a tribute to the music of iconic singer/songwriter Tom Waits.
Stephen Holden of The New York Times calls Mulder’s performance “Far and away the season’s best cabaret show, it is everything the genre can be but almost never is.”
Mulder’s sound “frequently puts experienced cabaret-goers in mind of Blossom Dearie’s little-girl innocence, and therefore the least likely material she could tackle would be the gin-soaked, hard-luck, grimy inner-city stories of Tom Waits,” says Will Friedwald of The Wall Street Journal. Yet, “she takes his darkest and most profound songs and looks them straight in the eye.”
In addition to well-known Waits tunes like “Jersey Girl,” “Downtown Train,” “Ol’ 55,” “Rainbow Sleeves” and “(Looking for) the Heart of Saturday Night,” audiences can expect to hear spoken monologues from Waits’s 1975 album “Nighthawks at the Diner.”
Based in New York City, Mulder is the winner of the Noel Coward and Julie Wilson Award, the MAC Award for Major Artist and Album of the Year, Bistro Award for Vocalist of the Year, and the Metropolitan Room MetroStar Challenge.
Tickets cost $20 advance, $25 at the door, and can be purchased at www.delaware valleyartsalliance.org and at 845/252-7272. The Tusten Theatre is located at 210 Bridge St.
