Time to hit the ice!

When the temps drop and the lakes freeze over, it’s time to grab your gear and hit the ice! Ice fishing is like a winter adventure with your friends, but instead of hiking, you’re chilling (literally) on a frozen lake, waiting for a fish to bite. There’s something super cool about drilling a hole in the ice, setting up your line, and seeing what you can catch. Plus, you get to bundle up in your warmest clothes, hang out with snacks and just enjoy the frosty vibes. Winter might be cold, but ice fishing makes it awesome.

Here are some events happening our communities and beyond:

Mark your calendars for the annual Youth Ice Fishing Tournament hosted by Smugglers Nob Rod & Gun Club. This event will take place on Sunday, February 2 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Mitchell Pond in Cochecton, NY. Parents, please bring all of the kids for a fun-filled day of ice fishing. All kids fish for free. There will be food and beverages for all kids who participate, and all children will be eligible for prizes. Fishing regulations will be in accordance with NYDEC. The fishing access is located at 175 Mitchell Pond West Road. Transportation will be provided by club members. No outside ATV/UTVs will be permitted. Please contact Harold “Boomer” Russell at 845/583-6602 or Kevin Esselman at 845/932-7829 with any questions.

There will be a free youth ice-fishing derby on January 25 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. (weather and ice permitting) at Ten Mile River Boy Scouts Crystal Lake. Free refreshments; bring your own tipups and bait. Augers will be there for drilling holes. There will be prizes for all youngsters. For more information call Ray Otto at 908/797-3400.

The Sullivan County Conservation Club will present King of the Ice on February 16, 2025 on White Lake/Kauneonga Lake. The event runs from 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. with awards and prizes to follow. There will be up to $2,000 in total cash and prizes. Registration, weigh-in and awards will take place at the White Lake Firehouse. Complete rules/details can be found at www.sullivancountyconservationclub.org.

Mark your calendars for March 22, when there will be a Tricky Tray at the Lake Huntington Firehouse benefitting the Cochecton Volunteer Ambulance Corp and the SWCSD Class of 2025. Donations are needed.
