Three arrested after violent gang assault

Friday incident took place at Knights Inn Motel

LIBERTY, NY — The Village of Liberty Police Department arrested three individuals after an investigation into an assault.

The Village of Liberty Police Department responded to a report of a large fight at the Knights Inn Motel on State Route 52 in the Village of Liberty at approximately 2:05 pm on Friday 3/28/25.

Responding units found a 31 year old male, unconscious as a result of injuries sustained from being severely beaten in the parking lot of the motel. Officers immediately began providing first aid to the individual and transferred care to emergency medical services.

The victim was transported to Garnet Catskill Medical Center and then transferred to Garnet Health Medical Center in Orange County due to the severity of his injuries.

On scene, Liberty Police Officers arrested two suspects that had participated in the assault, Michael Maus, 26 of Liberty, and Dante VanDunk, 26 of Liberty. Additional investigation resulted in identifying, locating and arresting a third individual, Richard Olsen, 39 of Liberty later that evening.

All three individuals were arraigned in the Town of Liberty Court.

Maus was remanded to the Sullivan County Jail in lieu of $75,000 cash bail, $125,000 bond or $300,000 partially secured bond. Vandunk was remanded to the Sullivan County Jail in lieu of $50,000 cash bail, $100,000 bond, or $250,000 partially secured bond. Olsen was remanded to the Sullivan County Jail in lieu of $50,000 cash bail, $100,000 bond or $250,000 partially secured bond.

Village of Liberty Police Chief Steven D’Agata stated, “This was a violent and troubling incident, and unfortunately, it reflects ongoing concerns at this location. The Village of Liberty Police Department remains committed to working with community partners to address public safety issues of this nature. While these individuals were quickly apprehended and arrested, much work remains from the entire community to adequately address the realities of the ongoing systems in which conditions like this are created.”
