‘The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson' conversation and discussion

ONLINE — The Hurleyville Performing Arts Centre (HPAC) will commemorate Juneteenth and the Stonewall Uprising with a watch party and talk-back. Watch “The Death and Life of Marsha P. Johnson” on your own time; it is currently streaming on Netflix. Then join a post-screening discussion hosted by HPAC staff on Friday, June 19 at 7:30 p.m. via Zoom. In order to create a safe space for dialogue, registration is required to join the Zoom talk-back.

In the film, Victoria Cruz investigates the mysterious 1992 death of Black gay rights activist and Stonewall veteran Marsha P. Johnson using archival interviews with Johnson and new interviews with Johnson’s family, friends and fellow activists.

The discussion will be facilitated by Juli Grey-Owns of Trans Forum 101 and Gender Equality New York and hosted by HPAC staff Ellyane Hutchinson and Michael Coney.

‘The Ecology of Aquatic Plants’ workshop

ONLINE — The Lacawac Sanctuary is hosting a conversation with Dr. Elizabeth Carroll, a professor from Holy Family University specializing in aquatic plant ecology and identification, for a workshop on aquatic plants. The free, one-hour workshop will cover the following topics: what makes aquatic plants unique, the role of aquatic plants in lake ecosystems, how to identify common native and invasive aquatic plants and how to conduct a survey of the aquatic plants in your lake.

Legend Mania Race at Marshall Machinery

HONESDALE, PA — After not being able to run a race for more than two months, the indoor carpet is ready to go for the annual Legend Mania Race on Saturday, June 20. Start time is at 4 p.m. as it was throughout the winter season. For those who want to practice, hours are Tuesday through Friday, 2 to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Only 25 Legend cars will be permitted to race. The entry fee costs $25 and each driver will receive a battery and motor. Trophies will be awarded for the three fastest cars and the three best looking cars.

Masks are required. All tables and chairs will have been sprayed and cleaned the evening before.

Drive-in laser light show

BETHEL, NY — On Saturday, June 20, Yasgur Road is opening up for its first event of our season, an event made specifically for the times we are living in.

Featuring four drive-in movie-style screens, attendees will experience the sounds of Pink Floyd, the Grateful Dead and Woodstock 1969, all set to a fully customized, immersive laser light show. The entire experience will be enjoyed from the comfort of your vehicle.

The night features two separate shows, each running at approximately 90 minutes with a 45-minute intermission in between. Gates open at 7:30 p.m. and the show starts at 9. Tickets cost $30 for the first show only and $50 for both shows.

The workshop will cover first-time homebuyer grants that will assist with down payment, closing costs and minor home improvements up to $25,000; affordable homeownership options through the Sullivan County Land Bank; and other grants and programs that may assist in the purchase of your home.

Lacawac Sanctuary announces summer day camps

LAKE ARIEL, PA — Lacawac Sanctuary’s education staff recently announced plans for summer day camps. The schedule of camps is as follows:

Virtual Camp - Backyard Adventures is for ages seven to 11, costs $80 and will take place Monday through Friday, July 6 through 10. This program is full of activities and lessons that can be done right in your backyard, along with daily interactive Google meets. Materials for crafts and ecological experiments will be provided for children to keep after camp is over. (Some materials may be returned with a reimbursement.) This brand-new course developed for the naturalist in your home may be done at one’s own pace.

On-Site Camp - Natural Connections is for ages eight to 11, costs $115 for one week and $200 for two weeks and will be hosted in two sessions: The first runs from July 13 to 17 and 20 to 24, and the second runs from July 27 to 31 and August 3 to 7. Campers will learn about habitats, investigate climate and weather patterns, examine animal adaptations and inquire about the inner workings of our local ecosystems.
