SUNY Sullivan’s disability/disorder theater season

LOCH SHELDRAKE, NY — The disability community is historically marginalized, said director Jessica López-Barkl in a news release. SUNY Sullivan is located in a county whose largest employer is the healthcare industry that serves people with disabilities. The college wanted to bring a heightened awareness of who’s absent from the room or whose story is not being told. “We will focus on one classical play from the Spanish Golden Age, a new work that is a powerful vehicle for voices from underrepresented communities, and a musical that highlights the possibilities of performance,” she said.
The SUNY Sullivan theater program will be sensitive to the fact that it is not enough to have representation on stage if the stories of marginalized people are not also represented in the work in a thoughtful and authentic manner.
They hope to partner with regional organizations to provide an array of educational opportunities. This will show, she said, that the art that artists with disabilities make and are represented in is enriched and enhanced by the extraordinary circumstances of their lives.
For more information, contact Jessica López-Barkl at jbarkl@sunysullivan.edu.

Don’t drive drunk

LIVINGSTON MANOR, NY — Operation Prom Night was launched recently, warning teens about the dangers of driving drunk.
The Livingston Manor Fire Department, EMS agencies, deputies from the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office and district attorney Meagan Galligan worked with teens in the Livingston Manor School District.
On Operation Prom Night, following a discussion with DA Galligan, the teen audience witnessed a simulated fatal drunk driving crash. As Galligan narrated, the deputies put one student through simulated field sobriety tests and ultimately simulated his arrest on the scene. Multiple agencies responded to the simulation, extracting teen actors from the wreckage of two crashed vehicles, using the Jaws of Life and other emergency equipment.
Involved in Operation Prom Night were the Livingston Manor Fire Department, the Livingston Manor Volunteer Ambulance Corps, the Roscoe-Rockland Fire Department, Mobile Medic, the Sullivan County Emergency Operations Center, Sullivan County sheriff’s deputies and district attorney Meagan K. Galligan.
“The numbers are clear,” Galligan said. “Every day, 300,000 people drive drunk in our country, killing one person every 50 minutes as a result. As I heard so many of my partners say… one person’s decision to stay put or call a sober ride could be the difference between life and death for the driver, a passenger or an innocent parent, friend or child. I am grateful that our local schools are committed to educating our kids on the high price tag that can be attached to a single bad decision.”

Spring exhibitions at the Delaware Valley Arts Alliance

NARROWSBURG, NY — The Delaware Valley Arts Alliance (DVAA) will exhibit paintings by Brian Madonna, “Sophisters, Economists and Calculations,” and “The Shape of Paper,” organized by Jamie Sherzer.

There will be an opening reception from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on May 14.
There is no charge, and masks are required.
The DVAA is located at 37 Main St.
In exhuming his family’s experience of abuse at the hands of cult leaders, Brian Madonna’s work recognizes a familiar fragmentation of reality that occurred in their experience and is comparable with the contemporary experience of alienation, stated a DVAA release.
The Shape of Paper is a group show featuring a collective of interdisciplinary artists working in paper, pulp and fiber. The works on view range from installation, sculpture, fiber and metal, to more seemingly traditional works on paper.
Artists in the collective include Xuewu Zheng, Maggie Oakes, Hayoon Jay Lee, Emilie Houssart, Jamie Sherzer and Sariah Park.
