MIDDLETOWN, NY — Last year it was Mike Mullally, as he proved virtually indomitable in track, racking up medal after medal in Section IX and NYS track events: 55-meter hurdles, 110- and 400-meter hurdles, and the 100-meter dash.
This year, it might be Samantha “Sam” Becker’s turn to shine in the limelight for Sullivan West.
On May 8, Becker took the brass ring in four events during a track and field meet against John S. Burke.
At the Section IX Class D championships at Middletown High’s Faller Field complex on May 23, the senior scholar-athlete continued her winning ways by garnering first place honors in four events: 100-meters, 100 hurdles, 400 hurdles and the pole vault.
The state qualifiers will be held at Faller Field May 30–31, and Becker is currently ranked second in the 100-meter hurdles in the state’s Division 2, and fourth in state in the 400 hurdles.
Looking down the road a bit further, the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Track and Field finals are scheduled for Friday–Saturday, June 6–7, at Faller Field.
So 2019 just might be Sam Becker’s time to show the world she is a young woman of indomitable spirit.
