Sullivan West outlines reopening plan

JEFFERSONVILLE, NY — Stephen Walker, superintendent of Sullivan West Central School District, has released the district’s plan for reopening this fall.

“In order to allow for social distancing of our students and our staff, we will be limiting the daily number of students attending school in-person to approximately 50 percent. This will mean that it is likely that your child [or children] will attend school in-person two days per week, while taking part in at-home learning the remaining three days per week,” he said in a letter to parents. “By splitting our student body into two groups, one group will attend school in-person on Monday and Tuesday of each week, while the second group will attend school in-person on Thursday and Friday.”

Students and staff will be required to masks when inside the school, except during meals, physical activity and physically distanced classroom instruction, according to the letter.

Bus rides to and from school are expected to continue this fall, with one student per seat, except for siblings who can sit together. Walker encouraged parents to drive their children to school if possible.

Noting that this outlined plan “leaves many questions unanswered,” Walker said the district is continuing with New York State health officials to bring parents more detailed information in the coming weeks.
