LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY — By all accounts, it was truly a banner year for the scholar athletes at Sullivan West Central School.

On Friday, June 16 the local community turned out in force to honor the prowess of their sons and daughters on the fields of play at the 2017 Spring Sports Awards Presentation.

Under the proud ”Banner of the Bulldogs, Spring Champions,” Sullivan West posted numerous school varsity records: divisional titles in baseball, girls’ track, girls’ golf, boys’ track and softball; a sectional championship in girls’ golf; and a class championship in girls’ track.

In addition to the Bulldogs baseball and softball teams earning their respective divisional crowns, they qualified for sectionals, while Montana Schmidt qualified for the states in girls’ golf.

The big news of the day was track.

Adding to their divisional laurel wreath this year, the girls’ team went on to be named Section IX Class D champions, while Sam Becker, Grace Gaebel, Tallula Gann, Ava McLeod and Emily Pazuello were selected as New York State Public High School Athlete Association (NYSPHSAA) championship meet qualifiers.

The top gun in boy’s track was Mike Mullally as a NYSPHSAA two-time gold medalist and nationals qualifier.

Not too bad by anybody’s standards!

Asked about the meaning of what it takes to be a scholar athlete, Sullivan West’s athletic director David Franskevicz replied, “Somebody who excels on the field and in the classroom… they can balance both.”
