At an emergency meeting, the Sullivan County Legislature voted to waive the solid waste fees at the transfer stations to accept storm debris waste associated with Hurricane Sandy, effective Monday, November 5 through Sunday, November 11. The waiver does not include normal household waste.

According to county manager David Fanslau, the damage to public infrastructure and individual property was extensive, and significant storm debris needs to be disposed of. Town and village governments, as well as the residents, may dispose of storm debris without being concerned with paying disposal fees. The cost associated with storm cleanup from Hurricane Sandy will be reimbursed by Federal Emergency Management Agency, pending a declaration by Governor Cuomo.

Further, Fanslau announced that ASB Greenworld located at 848 Lt. Brender Hwy. in the Town of Bethel will accept storm debris consisting of trees and brush, which will be converted into mulch for an environmentally friendly reuse. This would also avoid landfilling clean waste that could have a productive use.”
