Sullivan legislature, District Six, Democratic, Working Families candidate Miranda Behan

I have lived in Hurleyville for the last 44 years. I am a small business owner and am very active in the community. I have a degree in travel and tourism from SUNY Sullivan. I am an active member of the Hurleyville Fire Department where I currently hold the position of vice president. I am an active member of the Town of Fallsburg Lions Club in which I am currently the dinner and program chair.

I have several concerns as a candidate for legislator: Our county employees continue to be overlooked. In one example, our deputy sheriffs in the jail were without a contract for seven years. In another example, legislators voted to give employees an inferior health insurance plan if they take a promotion to management. That is not acceptable.
Our towns have made numerous requests to the county for help with some form of revenue sharing to give tax relief to local residents, only to be ignored. But what I find really concerning is, at a time when municipalities around the country are closing their visitors’ centers and shifting to an internet-based model, our current legislature is planning to bond $4.1 million dollars to build a new visitors’ center here in Sullivan County.

County government must be responsible with its spending and not over extend the budget. We must closely monitor the tax breaks that are being given out. We must also create diverse and sustainable jobs and not rely solely on an entertainment oriented economy, so that our children are more likely to remain in the county, have a career and raise their families. These are some of the issues to consider when you vote in the November election
