SULLIVAN COUNTY, NY — Sullivan County Sheriff Mike Schiff has announced that he expects his Jail Division to be fully staffed by the end of this July.
The Sheriff took an "aggressive approach" to recruiting correctional deputies last year when the last civil service test for the jail was announced, according to the sheriff's office. The Sheriff then offered jobs to state DOCCS personnel after the wildcat corrections strike this past winter.
Since November of 2024, 20 new deputies have been hired in the jail. Another 3 state corrections officers are expected to transfer after they complete their background examinations.
“Mandation, where jail staff gets stuck on overtime after their regular shift, has been an ongoing problem in many jails across New York State”, said the Sheriff. “With the hiring of new staff we believe we are looking at the light at the end of the tunnel”.
The Sullivan County Jail has an authorized staffing level of 99 sworn members. The new jail deputies are expected to mitigate the mandatory overtime.
