WESTFALL, PA — Students and parents jammed the board room at the Delaware Valley (DV) administration building last week as members of two athletic teams and two student programs were introduced.
First up were fourth and fifth graders from Dingman-Delaware Elementary School (DDES) participating in the “Leader in Me” program with the goal of reaching more than 3,000 schools around the world that have been named as, or are applying toward being named as “Lighthouse Schools.”
According to the website, content from “The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People” is a key component of the overall “The Leader in Me” process. The seven habits are “a synthesis of universal, timeless principles of personal and interpersonal effectiveness, such as responsibility, vision, integrity, teamwork, collaboration and renewal, which are secular in nature and common to all people and cultures.”
The basic idea was that everybody can be a leader and everybody has something to offer.
The DDES students had been selected as leaders by other students this year instead of their teachers making selections. They read the goals, while presenting visuals, and finished by presenting small student-made lighthouses to board members.
Questioned about the hardest part of being a leader, one girl said, “All the attention, sometimes too much or too little.”
Then came a larger group from Dingman-Delaware who again presented the goals, this time with a video presentation. They had gifts of candy for the board and administrators.
DV athletics were well represented. Superintendent John Bell introduced the girls’ varsity volleyball team who this year are District 2 champions, and noted that DV had been district champs for seven years in a row and nine of the last 10 years.
Introducing the District 2 champion girls’ varsity soccer team, Bell reported that DV had four district champions this fall, including the boys’ varsity soccer and varsity football teams. However, it was a first for girls’ soccer at DV, he said. “Sixty years and first girls’ soccer championship. That’s awesome.”
In other business the board commended business manager Bill Hessling on the recently completed district audit, which did not include any findings for improvements; approved a three-year compensation for district tax collectors, calling collection percentage compensation of 2.8%, 2.85% and 2.9%, and noting that non-collection cost to the district ranges from $1,582 to $1,603; and heard Bell announce that the district’s architectural firm would be presenting the 2018-19 facilities study and recommendations at the December 15 meeting, which will be held at the Dingman-Delaware Middle School cafeteria.
