A contingent of residents from both sides of the river joined a demonstration on the Narrowsburg Bridge on the afternoon of September 20 to show solidarity with the Global Climate Strike, being held throughout the world.

Organizer Beverly Sterner said she was a bit disppointed that none of the schools in the area were joing in the GCS, as had been the case in many large cities.  She said the area needed to repeat the teach-ins of the sort used during the Vietnam War to educate the public about the ills of that war.

Elsewhere residents and students gathered in Kingston, NY at Academy Green Park on September 20 to take part in the Global Climate Strike (GCS).  According to National Public Radio, millions of young people took part in GCS marches around the world on that Friday, with the first marchers gathering in Australia.

More than 800 marches were planned for the U.S. with the largest taking place in New York City, Washington D.C., Chicago and Los Angeles.

GCS was launched by Greta Thunberg, a Swedish environmental activist, who kicked off the movement in August 2018, when she was 15 years old, by holding a one-woman protest in front of the Swedish parliament. From there, the Friday protests expanded around the world.
