“Off Grid,” of course, means that no bill is being generated for you from the electric supplier (in our case it would be NYSEG), as our dwelling does not have power attached to it.
Below are some ideas we have incorporated into our unexpected new summer routine. I’m sure you have some to add!
We are all likely familiar with this one: Close and draw insulated shades or curtains over all windows and maybe doors. Block leaky doors. Do this early while there is still coolness inside your home.
We use solar panels, and have been successful in generating enough power to run our 12 volt fridge and a small oscillating table fan throughout the hottest of these recent days.
Minimize what is often your busy day schedule. Rest indoors (kind of like having a “snow day”).
Hydrate, hydrate and add a high-quality electrolyte replacement to your glasses of fresh water.
Avoid all forays outside into the sun and heat. Heat-related illness is very sneaky and can even earn you several uncomfortable days on the sofa with nausea, lack of appetite and fatigue. Don’t think that you could be immune because you have no “underlying medical conditions.”
Cool off in the river, lake or pond. Explore cool immersion bathing. Design and use a wet cloth around your neck and wrists.
Have a small back-up inverter generator (sadly, fossil-fueled) to run a room air conditioner if needed. There may be newer solar technology for this issue. If you have ideas, please write!
It has been very warm and challenging. Take care of yourself, and do the same for others—pets included!
