DELAWARE, PA — A 53-year-old man was injured while mixing chemicals in his Delaware home, according to the PA State Police (PSP) at Blooming Grove.
Emergency responders were dispatched to Beech Road in Delaware Township at 12:48 p.m. on Thursday, May 9, following reports of an explosion, according to the state police.
The victim was found in his garage with severe lacerations across his body. The PSP says he was promptly airlifted to Lehigh Valley–Cedar Crest for medical attention.
Medical personnel found that his injuries were not caused by electrical factors.
Troopers from Blooming Grove secured the scene and asked for help from the PSP Hazardous Device and Explosive section and from bomb technicians with the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF).
An investigation revealed that the victim had been collecting metals for a scrapyard and had inadvertently mixed live primers with other scrap metal in a bucket, according to the state police. The resulting ignition led to the explosion.
The investigation did not uncover any criminal intent, and there is no ongoing danger to the public, said the police.
Trooper Joshua Byers is currently leading the investigation into the incident.
