Spring bling

Spring has suddenly swept its transformative blush of blossom and birdsong through the Upper Delaware River region.

Amphibians call from wetlands, vernal pools, ponds and lakes, waking our ears to the rising energy of new life, while the heady fragrances of earth-thaw and flowering plants are enough to nearly knock us over as our noses receive this most welcome message.

Spring has sprung, and brought its bling—just when we need it most!

“Nothing can cure the soul but the senses, just as nothing can cure the senses but the soul,” observed the Irish poet and playwright Oscar Wilde. As the season of renewal and restoration, spring offers such bountiful beauty that our bodies and spirits are revitalized.

“Let your mind be quiet, realizing the beauty of the world, and the immense, the boundless treasures that it holds in store,” wrote the English poet Edward Carpenter.

Make time to gaze silently into the face of a flower, listen with intention to the beautiful birdsong filling our forests, deeply inhale the lush aromas filling the air with a sense of promise and possibility. Notice the reverence that arises in response to your heightened awareness.

Begin right now by simply studying the spring bling depicted in this column. Then wander outside to wake your remaining senses as you celebrate spring’s abundant gifts.

Continue the connection by checking out upcoming opportunities to experience the nature of spring at the Delaware Highlands Conservancy (delawarehighlands.org), the Lacawac Sanctuary (lacawac.org/programs.html) or the Pocono Environmental Education Center (peec.org/programs/events/month.calendar/2023/04/21/-).
