Sparrowbush

Sparrowbush might not be on your must-see list of places to visit along the byway. Other than its whimsical name, this hamlet isn’t outwardly boastful. But Carol and Wilbur Etkes—on a walk through their neighborhood—were happy to boast.

Stop by the reservoir, they said. Sparrowbush residents have easy access to the Watershed Park and Recreation Area, which offers more than 25 miles of hiking trails along three reservoirs.

The Etkes also operate the Seventh Adventist Food Pantry. “You can’t miss it,” Carol said, “there’s a big ice cream cone out front.” The Etkes also own the next-door body shop. If you’re passing through Sparrowbush, stop in and say hi to the couple and make a donation to the food pantry.

Sparrowbush is in the Town of Deerpark, which was established after separating from Port Jervis. Nearby is Huguenot, Greenville and Matamoras, PA.
