As the New Year settles in, winter still rages. It’s the perfect storm. Cabin fever sets in as holiday bills arrive. Money is tight! What are some tonics for a young family, a busy adult, or a retiree on a limited income? Where can they go?

The answer might be closer than you realize. We are blessed with a wonderful resource in the Western Sullivan Public Library System. Branches are available in Callicoon, Jeffersonville and Narrowsburg. Separately and together, they offer materials every member of the community can enjoy.

Their website, www.wsplonline.org/index.php, is regularly updated, featuring programming schedules and news to make your visit as easy as possible. Right now, highlights include a teen hangout, ideal to get the crankiest of winter break high schoolers out of a grateful parent’s hair. The youngest members of the family might enjoy a story time, which features reading, singing songs, learning age-old rhymes and participation in felt-board-type activities, crafting and playing with new friends. This program is intended for ages 3 to 5, but all are welcome.

For more active children and kids under 3, the library offers a healthy blend of open play, structured games, felt-board activities and storybook reading. The ultimate goal is offering time for kids to socialize and make new friends.

The library system also offers great resources for local homeschoolers.

Always supportive of the local arts, you’re invited to join Sullivan County’s first-ever poet laureate Mark Blackford with special guests Bizzy Coy and William Fellenberg for a reading Saturday, January 18 at 2 p.m. at the Tusten-Cochecton Branch of the Western Sullivan Public Library.

Also focused on the personal growth of its patrons, the library offers computer help to those who might want to develop their own Mac or PC skills. To balance right and left brain, there are also programs for knitting, cookie decorating, reading groups and, of course, books galore. Classics and recent best-sellers are available for download or as printed, traditional books; Kindle or hardcover. The library proudly offers both.

So, the next time you’re wondering what to do to escape the winter blahs, consider getting into your car and heading to the library closest to your home. New thoughts, new experiences, new learnings and new friends await.

All you need is an available-to-all library card.
