Women’s Bar Association announces membership awards

MIDDLETOWN, NY — The Women’s Bar Association of Orange and Sullivan Counties (WBAOSC) has announced the recipients of the 2019 Membership Awards at its annual meeting on April 25 at Villa Venezia.

The Public Interest Attorney Member Award recgonizes a member for outstanding legal services and/or community supportive efforts in the public sector.

The Distinguished Attorney Member Award recgonizes a member who has made noteworthy contributions to WBAOSC, and who has made outstanding achievements within the profession and/or outstanding contributions to the community.

The WBAOSC created the Hon. Elaine Slobod Lifetime Achievement Award to recognize members who have demonstrated remarkable personal and professional achievement, and to acknowledge long standing, dedicated service to the Women’s Bar Association and its mission.  Judge Slobod is a founding member of the WBAOSC, the first woman to serve as Middletown City Court Judge, the first woman to be elected to a county-wide judicial office in Orange County when she was elected to the Family Court, and the first woman from Orange County to be elected to be a Justice of the Supreme Court in the Ninth Judicial District. 1

Stourbridge Project to host veteran networking event and more

HONESDALE, PA — On Tuesday, May 7 from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., the Stourbridge Project will present an introductory and interactive entrepreneurial course about starting your own home-based business. Sonia Smith, a specialist with the U.S. Small Business Administration, will discuss topics like generating the idea, creating a plan, evaluating the financing and accessing mentoring and training resources.

Later that Tuesday, from 6 to 8 p.m., all veterans are invited for a networking opportunity. This event will teach attendees how to access their veteran’s benefits and entrepreneurship opportunities while networking with other veterans. Light refreshments will be provided.

SEEDS offers $1,000 scholarship

WAYNE COUNTY, PA — SEEDS (Sustainable Energy Education and Development Support) of Northeastern PA will award a $1,000 scholarship to a college-bound high school senior (Pennsylvania resident) for the best essay about the following:

In what ways does our consumption of non-renewable energy sources affect the health and well-being of the Earth and its life forms? How does developing “clean” energy alternatives contribute to a more sustainable future? What practices have you seen in your community that indicate we’re going in the right or wrong direction? What information would you provide to educate people? What tools and strategies would you employ to accomplish this, both locally and beyond?

Local high school seniors from Western Wayne High School, Honesdale High School, Wallenpaupack Area High School and Canaan Christian Academy are eligible, as well as home-schooled seniors who reside within those school districts. The winner cannot be related to any SEEDS staff or board members.

Sullivan Renaissance internship program

FERNDALE, NY — The beautification and community development program Sullivan Renaissance has partnered with The Center for Workforce Development and is hiring several young adults (ages 16 to 20) to work on community projects. Interns will participate in a series of youth development meetings and a “Day-of-Service” project. Salaries are competitive, presenting a great opportunity to dig in and learn new skills.

Children’s mental health awareness 5k walk

NEWBURGH, NY — On Saturday, May 4 from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, Voices United 4 Change is throwing a 5k walk to raise awareness for children’s mental health. There will also be a tricky tray, face painting and arts and crafts at the event in Algonquin Park.

Writers and Readers at the Cooperage to hold first workshop

HONESDALE, PA — On Saturday, May 4 from 4 to 6 p.m., the Writers and Readers at The Cooperage (WRC) will hold its first workshop, Marketing Magic, to guide authors in creating a personalized marketing plan. The target audience is anyone who has published a book or is planning on publishing a book.

The WRC is a newly formed partnership between Authorfest and The Cooperage Project with a goal to hold events that serve the writing and reading community. In addition to the workshop, there will be a focus group to share opinions on the types of programs WRC should work to organize, to help the community’s readers and writers to achieve their literary goals. 

Donations are collected at the door, and there will be wine and cheese for those who participate in the focus group.

Vera’s Story Garden to become literary landmark

MONTICELLO, NY — On Saturday, May 4 at 11 a.m., Vera’s Story Garden alongside the Ethelbert B. Crawford Public Library will be designated as a literary landmark in honor of children’s book author and illustrator Vera B. Williams. The ceremony unveiling a commorative plaque is free and open to the public. Reshments foillow. Afterward, there will also be a StoryWalk along Broadway, featuring Williams book, “A Chair for My Mother.”
