Roadside litter pluck returns

SULLIVAN COUNTY, NY — The Sullivan County Legislature has announced that Sullivan County’s annual roadside litter pluck event will take place from Thursday, April 1 through Wednesday, June 30.

The county will waive the waste disposal fee for roadside litter plucked bags through the county’s parks, recreation and beautification department and the division of public works.

Sullivan County residents are encouraged to check with their local municipalities, as there are several organized litter pluck events being planned throughout the county.  

Residents who wish to participate in the county’s roadside litter pluck can pick up their free labeling stickers (which adhere to clear garbage bags to identify them as roadside litter) along with program guidelines at their town or village hall or county-operated transfer station. While no coupons are required, all roadside litter plucked refuse must be placed in clear bags and an event sticker adhered to the bag. Participants will be asked to register at the county-operated transfer station at the time of disposal.

April Fools with Farm Arts Collective

ONLINE — On Thursday, April 1 at 6 p.m., the Ethelbert B. Crawford Public Library in Monticello, NY will host April Fools with Farm Arts Collective: Fool Around with the Farm Arts Collective, a presentation by Tannis Kowalchuk.

Kowalchuk invites everyone to come and see a work in progress of some of the scenes they are working on for Dream on the Farm, a site-specific “eco-drama” that they develop each year on their farm.

Women’s support group

HONESDALE, PA — Stronger Together, Women Supporting Each Other Across the Lifespan will hold its first in-person meeting since March of last year.  The group will meet on Tuesday, March 30 at 6 p.m. in Wayne Memorial Hospital’s David Katz Conference Room. Pike County Conservation District presents a free stream-crossing webinar

ONLINE — The Pike County Conservation District is holding a free webinar for contractors and road maintenance professionals about road projects that cross streams. The information will be presented by Wade Brown from the Penn State Center for Dirt and Gravel Road Studies and Chris Ingulli, head of the PCCD Dirt, Gravel and Low Volume Road (DGLVR) Program.

Brown will show and review the negative impacts of undersized crossings and poorly designed projects. He will also cover the process of using the DGLVR policy and criteria to design and install better stream crossings that will minimize environmental impacts and could greatly reduce future maintenance costs.

The webinar will be held on Thursday, April 1 from 9 to 10:30 a.m. It will be held via Zoom and provide plenty of time at the end for questions and answers. Registration for this event is free but requested by Monday, March 29.

New York State Smokers’ Quitline hosts webinar, panel on tobacco dependence

ONLINE — The New York State Smokers’ Quitline (Quitline) will host two online sessions in the coming weeks on treating and overcoming tobacco dependence. A webinar on Thursday, March 25, geared toward health care professionals, will focus on treating priority populations. One week later, on Thursday, April 1, an online panel of young adults and loved ones will share stories of becoming tobacco-free. Registration for both events is free and available at the Quitline’s Online News Room at www.nysmokefree.com/newsroom.

On Thursday, March 25 from 11 a.m. to 12 noon via WebEx, the Quitline will
present Enhanced Quitline Tobacco Cessation Services to Support Priority Populations. The webinar will provide health care professionals with the knowledge, evidence, resources and tools to enhance their on-site tobacco dependence treatment interventions. Priority populations, such as those who experience psychological distress or are dependent on alcohol or drugs, tend to exhibit greater use of tobacco products and require enhanced services to treat their tobacco addiction.

On Thursday, April 1 from 5 to 6 p.m. via Zoom, the Quitline will present Tobacco-Free Stories and Tips from the Young and Young-at-Heart. The event takes place on Take Down Tobacco National Day of Action and celebrates 10 years of the CDC’s Tips From Former Smokers Campaign and recent Quitline success stories. The online panel discussion will also include a brief welcome and presentation from the CDC’s Office of Smoking and Health.
